Then, I had no liking to outdoor sports and sailing was obviously
never part of my preferred sport either. However, the surprising
win in the recent lucky draw gave me a whole new perspective
in sailing.
If my journey in sailing could be written in a book, I would
daringly say that majority of the book would be about the
setbacks and challenges faced. It would only be until the
end of the book, which would testify my great love for this
sport. Sailing is never just about interest but also a calling
to an undefined quantity of dedications and passion put into
it. For me, hard work to me is definitely an understatement.
Initially, I was given the title "lousiest" sailor
in my batch of sailors. I was unable to grasp the technique
of a simple capsize drill even after so many practices. I
simply lagged behind others but never once gave up. Despite
my inadequacies, I have learnt to be more patient and to persevere
under pressure. Slowly but surely, I have improved tremendously
in my sailing techniques.
With minimal or zero sailing experience, I gamely participated
myself for the SAFYC (Sembawang) Regatta in 2004. The four
long running day's regatta was a total hellhole for an amateur
like me. I had to be rescued most of the time, as the wind
was not to my advantage at up to ten knots. I may not have
gotten a good placing in that competition but it certainly
boosts my confidence and gave me the courage to step out of
my comfort zone.
After some serious coaching and a series of regattas, I am
definitely a better sailor that could only be possible under
the guidance of Mr. Tonny Tan. I am no longer a burden to
the squad and am just as competent as any sailors in the squad.
I recently took part in the SAFYC (Changi) Regatta 2006 and
completed the regatta. With wind blowing beyond 15 knots at
the height of the Northeast Monsoon, I completed all the six
races successfully.
The turning point of this journey was the purchase of this
Laser (Radial) craft, which I first lay my eye on at Pesta
Sukan 2004. Little did I realize today, I am the proud owner
of the same beautiful racing boat, which is definitely a Miracle!
Miracle is turning five this May and I am looking
forward to celebrating Miracle's birthday that shares
the same birth month as mine. The new ownership of Miracle
also indicates the advancement of my sailing milestone.
Special thanks to my coach, Tonny Tan or more fondly known
as "Uncle Tonny", Jeremy Hoh, SAFYC Seasports Officer,
LTC Tang Wai San, Captain of Sail, and fellow sailors for
their help in making the commission such a huge success.
