Round
the World in… 12 years and Counting
Beinda Au Yong meets the spirited adventurer who has been
on a round the world expedition since 1994.

Meeting Jason Lewis for
the first time without knowing anything about his background,
he struck me as an extremely unassuming guy who was adaptable
to different cultures and able to seize the day and enjoy
any experience that life throws him. His one comment made
me exceeding curious -"When I'm in the peddle boat
alone, I have on occasion developed 'other personalities'
to keep myself company. I figure I can consider myself still
'sane' - not spiraling into full-blown schizophrenia- as
long as I don't forget which personality I am." I was
curious. I did my research.
Born in Catterick, England in 1967, Jason
felt the first stirrings of wanderlust at the grand old
age of 3. He travelled 1 mile from home to investigate a
terrestrial object called a digger. His taste for adventure
is reflected in the way his eyes light up when I hinted
at the existence of an underbelly to Singapore's pristine
surface. Pointing out proudly that he should visit the shady
'Three Floor of Whores', he gently corrected me -"Isn't
it supposed to be Four Floors, Orchard Towers?" He
is an intrepid investigator to boot, having quickly sniffed
out the less publicized bits of Singapore.
Beginning his human-powered odyssey in 1994,
Jason has travelled through Europe crossed the Atlantic
Ocean, North & Central America and Australia on various
eco-friendly means - biking, rollerblading, boating and
kayaking. Upholding the philosophy of sustainable development,
he also aims to spread this message to children around the
world. Talks for children are scheduled at the SAF Yacht
Club in mid February into March 2006.
Putting up at the backpacker's heaven- Little
India - while in Singapore, Jason enjoys the Indian food
around the area tremendously, marveling at the affordability.
Moksha*, his pedal boat, is berthed at the SAF Yacht Club,
Changi Clubhouse, a cosy little resting place before he
proceeds on the next leg of his travels.
*Moksha is a 26ft X 4.5ft wooden boat
powered by pedals. The word Moksha means 'freedom' or 'liberation'
in Sanskrit
